International-Youth-CouncilIn 2015, the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) framework formally comes to an end. There is already a lot of discussion globally as to what will succeed the MDGs. Major decisions are being made on the future of development. Key to which is the priority given to water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) and the role young people, who are adversely affected by a lack of access to these essential services, will play. The International Youth Council (IYC) believes it is young people who will suffer most from the impact of bad decisions. Therefore, their voice must be heard.

This Post-MDG toolkit, based on material originally produced by WaterAid, has been developed to support IYC and our youth affiliations in carrying out advocacy around the post-2015 framework. It contains briefing materials on the process of deciding the new framework; information on the importance of WASH in alleviating poverty and promoting sustainable development; and an overview of IYC’s demands in relation to the new framework from a youth perspective. These resources can be used for national, regional and international advocacy efforts and adapted as appropriate. They are for any young people, and anyone working with young people, who may engage in post-2015 conversations and consultations with the UN, government, civil society and the private sector.

Youth WASH Ambassadors are concerned with making sure every young person has the opportunity to take part in shaping the future of WASH. It is vital we raise awareness about the importance of these vital services, mobilise young people to work together, and build their capacity to lobby for WASH in the post-2015 framework and beyond.
